For some weird sociological reason I have yet to puzzle out, teenage Japanese girls are irresistibly attracted to the sight of androgynous teenage Japanese boys making out with each other. A staple of Japanese manga, stories of boy crushes are now making their way to the movies, where an eager audience of slightly confused girls awaits. A prime example: Schoolboy Crush, in which complications arise when a teacher insinuates himself into the horny mix.

Teacher Aoi (Kotani Yoshikazu) has just been dumped by his boyfriend and seeks solace with a young male prostitute named Sora (Kanno Atsumi), who just happens to show up as a transfer student at Aoi's prestigious boy's boarding school the next day. Panicky because his cell number is in Sora's cell phone and worried that he's going to be blackmailed, Aoi is a mess as Sora settles into school life with the help of his roommate, the instantly infatuated Ichiyu (Kawakubo Yuuki).

For his part, Sora is anything but a conniving hustler. Easygoing, optimistic, and downright dreamy, he's happy to be a schoolboy by day as long as he can sneak back into town to be a hustler by night. In fact, he becomes a big man on campus almost instantly, much to the dismay of the megarich kid Riku (Kazunori Tani), whom he has displaced in that role.

So who's going to bed whom, and when? Ichiyu is driven to distraction by his roommate's beauty, and his grades suffer at first and then plunge when he gets an inkling that Sora has a dirty secret life. Aoi is driven to distraction by the constant threat of exposure. And Riku is driven to distraction by his loss of power. In fact, everyone is so distracted that they actually forget to have sex at all. For a movie that bills itself as superhot, there's a lot more talking than kissing. Perhaps that's the thing about this genre: teenage girls long for romance but fear sex (see Twilight). Better to create a sexy atmosphere than to actually drop one's drawers.

When all these shenanigans start leaking out, disaster piles upon disaster, and we're left to wonder if any of these characters will escape being punished for their basic human longings. There may be a happy ending ahead, but only if they survive to see it.

Schoolboy Crush is ultimately interesting as a window into one very particular slice of Japan's rich pop culture. See it for the sociology but not for the sex.
